00:00:16.931 --> 00:00:23.053
Welcome to Puppy Talk, episode number 103.

00:00:23.053 --> 00:00:29.405
I'm your host, dale Buchanananan, and today I want to talk about five tips for bringing home a new puppy.

00:00:29.405 --> 00:00:35.646
I get this question a lot from people who call me or email me and are getting ready to bring home a new puppy.

00:00:35.646 --> 00:00:48.630
They haven't hired a dog trainer yet, but most of the time they do hire me before they even bring the puppy home, and this is great because we can start working with this puppy right away to prevent any unwanted puppy behaviors.

00:00:49.820 --> 00:00:53.070
The first item on the list is to puppy-proof your house.

00:00:53.070 --> 00:01:00.228
One of the first things you should do is make your living space safe and ready for a playful and curious puppy.

00:01:00.228 --> 00:01:07.263
Don't forget to keep all electrical sockets out of reach with outlet plug covers to prevent electrical shock.

00:01:07.263 --> 00:01:15.888
Electrical wires and device cords can also be dangerous if your new puppy chews them or trips and gets entangled in them.

00:01:15.888 --> 00:01:20.762
Use cord mates and wire hiders to keep everything out of the way.

00:01:20.762 --> 00:01:30.391
Puppies tend to stumble often, so a sturdy gate at the top of your stairs will prevent even the most persistent puppy from falling down the stairs.

00:01:30.391 --> 00:01:38.873
Sharp edges and furniture corners can also cause problems, so corner guards are essential for puppy-proofing your home.

00:01:40.180 --> 00:01:43.585
Number two set up a sleeping space.

00:01:43.585 --> 00:01:52.590
Since new puppies sleep a lot 16 to 18 hours a day a comfortable puppy crate is necessary for a good night's sleep.

00:01:52.590 --> 00:01:57.191
The crate must be big enough for your puppy to stretch out and stand fully.

00:01:57.191 --> 00:02:04.129
Of course, you also have to account for its growing rate, so you might need to switch to a bigger crate later on.

00:02:04.129 --> 00:02:08.846
Pick a good crate without any sharp edges and place it strategically.

00:02:08.846 --> 00:02:15.147
You need a corner where your puppy can observe what's going on in the family and get some rest occasionally.

00:02:15.147 --> 00:02:19.364
A quiet corner in the living room or sitting room is ideal.

00:02:19.364 --> 00:02:26.348
Another good idea is to allocate a resting corner in parts of the house where you want your puppy to be close to you.

00:02:26.348 --> 00:02:29.568
A suitable, well-placed bed will be enough.

00:02:30.659 --> 00:02:34.091
Number three prepare a drinking and eating station.

00:02:34.091 --> 00:02:41.431
Your puppy will require access to fresh water, so you need to place a drinking bowl close to the puppy crate.

00:02:41.431 --> 00:02:45.609
You must also train your puppy to eat slowly early on.

00:02:45.609 --> 00:02:57.734
It's a good idea to buy a high-quality slow-feeding bowl to avoid overeating and place it at the designated eating station, whether that be in the kitchen, the living room, etc.

00:02:57.734 --> 00:03:05.175
And place a second drinking bowl close to it, but not too close, because spilled food may dirty the water.

00:03:05.175 --> 00:03:13.394
Clean the bowls thoroughly before every meal, especially outdoor bowls, since they gather microbes and bacteria.

00:03:14.760 --> 00:03:18.711
Number four Assemble your puppy care and grooming tools.

00:03:18.711 --> 00:03:23.002
Several tools and items will make caring for your puppy much easier.

00:03:23.002 --> 00:03:30.770
You will need a bathtub suitable for puppies and small dogs and a dental care kit with brushes and pet-safe toothpaste.

00:03:30.770 --> 00:03:39.050
You can choose from various brushes and combs for basic grooming, while a Furminator will help you deal with shedding.

00:03:39.050 --> 00:03:43.879
Lastly, assemble a canine first-aid kit to tackle emergencies.

00:03:43.879 --> 00:03:55.163
You can start with a quality commercial kit and add items suitable for dogs and puppies, such as canine pain relief, special bandages, a paw protection cream, etc.

00:03:56.985 --> 00:04:00.776
Number five purchase a variety of high-quality toys.

00:04:00.776 --> 00:04:04.955
Your puppy requires a lot of attention and diversion.

00:04:04.955 --> 00:04:08.775
After all, a bored puppy is bound to get in trouble.

00:04:08.775 --> 00:04:15.657
To avoid many behavior problems, invest in some high-quality puppy toys to keep them entertained.

00:04:15.657 --> 00:04:18.593
These toys can also help you with training.

00:04:18.593 --> 00:04:22.757
They must be safe, durable and easy to clean.

00:04:22.757 --> 00:04:28.297
They must also offer enough mental and physical stimulation for a growing puppy.

00:04:29.485 --> 00:04:36.776
Chew and squeaky toys can be a lot of fun, but you must also experiment with activity, puzzles and even treat toys.

00:04:36.776 --> 00:04:44.505
Your puppy's taste will evolve as it grows, so be sure to retire unplayed toys and introduce new ones.

00:04:44.505 --> 00:04:47.973
A Kong and Licky Mat are my preferred choices.

00:04:47.973 --> 00:04:59.369
Undoubtedly, bringing a new puppy home and raising it requires a lot of work and patience, as I've said in almost every podcast I've done since I started Puppy Talk.

00:04:59.369 --> 00:05:13.257
Getting all of your preparations out of the way before your puppy arrives means you can have some peace of mind, focus your time and energy on the puppy itself and fine-tune your training methods before you apply them.

00:05:13.257 --> 00:05:16.230
I hope this information was helpful to you.
