00:00:16.911 --> 00:00:22.870
Welcome to Puppy Talk, episode number 101.

00:00:22.870 --> 00:00:34.548
I'm your host, dale Buchanan, and on this episode I want to talk about whether you should get another puppy or not, or another dog, whether you have one dog already or two dogs.

00:00:34.548 --> 00:00:37.408
Maybe you've got three dogs and you wanna get another dog.

00:00:37.408 --> 00:00:40.408
I'm not gonna tell you what to do in this podcast.

00:00:40.408 --> 00:00:49.375
What I will do is I'll highlight the pros, cons, misconceptions and the facts of owning multiple dogs.

00:00:49.375 --> 00:00:59.134
Before we get started, make sure that you refer to the last podcast that I did regarding financial responsibility for pet ownership.

00:00:59.134 --> 00:01:07.614
I go into the cost of owning a dog and also touch on owning multiple dogs and how expensive that can get.

00:01:07.614 --> 00:01:16.034
Also, consider the podcast that I did in January 2024 right here on Puppy Talk about litter mate syndrome.

00:01:16.034 --> 00:01:22.393
This episode highlights the importance of being well informed about getting two puppies at once.

00:01:23.602 --> 00:01:25.227
Let's get started with this episode.

00:01:25.227 --> 00:01:31.091
There are two pros to getting a second dog when you already have one.

00:01:31.091 --> 00:01:37.793
The first is that your current dog will have a playmate, a friend and a companion.

00:01:37.793 --> 00:01:43.191
This is usually the number one reason why most owners get a second dog.

00:01:43.191 --> 00:01:49.864
The next pro is for personal reasons, that you will have the love of multiple dogs.

00:01:49.864 --> 00:01:56.605
This is very comforting to a lot of humans to have affection from more than one dog.

00:01:56.605 --> 00:02:01.900
This is another reason why a lot of dog owners get more than one dog.

00:02:03.102 --> 00:02:05.969
Let's talk about the cons of getting a second dog.

00:02:05.969 --> 00:02:12.472
First of all, consider the financial responsibility the food, the vet bills, equipment.

00:02:12.472 --> 00:02:17.673
Refer to the last podcast episode I did discussing this in great detail.

00:02:17.673 --> 00:02:23.165
The second con is the time it takes to manage and train multiple dogs.

00:02:23.165 --> 00:02:32.909
Most people think you can train both dogs together, but in the facts that I list at the end of this podcast, I will explain that you have to train each dog separately.

00:02:32.909 --> 00:02:37.687
You have to walk two dogs at once and this can be challenging for most owners.

00:02:37.687 --> 00:02:48.145
Most of the people that I train have multiple dogs and they don't know how to walk two dogs at once in a civil manner to where they are following them and not playing all the time.

00:02:48.145 --> 00:02:55.272
The next con is that you have to think about transporting two dogs at once and this can be a challenge.

00:02:55.272 --> 00:02:57.659
One dog may be bigger than the other dog.

00:02:57.659 --> 00:02:58.542
One dog may be in the back of the SUV.

00:02:58.542 --> 00:02:59.324
One dog may be in front seat.

00:02:59.324 --> 00:03:01.408
You might put both dogs in the back seat and they might play all the time.

00:03:01.408 --> 00:03:03.051
And dog may be in front seat.

00:03:03.051 --> 00:03:06.782
You might put both dogs in the back seat and they might play all the time.

00:03:06.782 --> 00:03:16.423
And this can be very challenging, very frustrating to the owner and also a liability if you are driving and this could be a safety hazard.

00:03:16.423 --> 00:03:17.884
So you have to think about that.

00:03:17.884 --> 00:03:34.278
The final con to owning multiple dogs is that they will always want to play, even when you want them to be disciplined, and 70% of my clients are people that have multiple dogs and all dogs are out of control.

00:03:34.278 --> 00:03:37.629
No dogs are trained, they just don't know what to do.

00:03:37.629 --> 00:03:45.884
Everything is chaos is chaos.

00:03:45.884 --> 00:03:51.978
So I have to go in creating a plan and structure, train each dog separately and teach them how to use management techniques to keep each dog calm and relaxed while in the house.

00:03:53.205 --> 00:04:01.367
Some of the misconceptions of having multiple dogs One dogs will not necessarily teach other dogs.

00:04:01.367 --> 00:04:15.736
A lot of people get a dog thinking adult dog will teach my puppy how to go potty outside because I'll let them both go together outside and the puppy will watch the older dog go potty in the grass.

00:04:15.736 --> 00:04:19.992
So the puppy's gonna go potty in the grass and never have an accident in the house.

00:04:19.992 --> 00:04:21.771
That is not true.

00:04:21.771 --> 00:04:29.615
It's the owner's responsibility to train a puppy to go potty outside, not your other dog.

00:04:29.615 --> 00:04:34.165
Misconception number two Dogs need a companion at home.

00:04:34.165 --> 00:04:36.550
This is absolutely false.

00:04:36.550 --> 00:04:38.113
I have Dixie.

00:04:38.113 --> 00:04:39.956
She's four and a half years old.

00:04:39.956 --> 00:04:42.427
I've had her since she was 10 weeks old.

00:04:42.427 --> 00:05:01.855
She does not have a companion at home because when she's at home she's relaxed, she's on her bed, she's chewing her deer antler, she's always calm and she has a daycare that she goes to three to four days a week where she can have play, enrichment, socialization with other dogs.

00:05:01.855 --> 00:05:09.475
This is her outlet and she doesn't need a companion at home because she's getting plenty of companionship at the daycare.

00:05:10.505 --> 00:05:18.351
The final misconception is that you can train one dog and the other dog will follow along, and this is absolutely false.

00:05:18.351 --> 00:05:22.776
You cannot train one dog and expect the other dog to watch and learn.

00:05:22.776 --> 00:05:24.589
Every dog is different.

00:05:24.589 --> 00:05:27.031
Every breed learns differently.

00:05:27.031 --> 00:05:29.353
The age of the dog will learn differently.

00:05:29.353 --> 00:05:33.315
Training a puppy is completely different than training an adult dog.

00:05:33.315 --> 00:05:36.574
Adult dogs have brains that are more developed.

00:05:36.574 --> 00:05:38.129
They can learn faster.

00:05:38.129 --> 00:05:47.271
Puppies need to learn very simple, foundational things first and foremost, such as stopping the jumping and the play, biting and being rambunctious.

00:05:47.271 --> 00:06:00.642
Adult dogs are going to be much sharper, much more focused, so you don't want to have one dog teach the other dog or train one dog and think that the other dog is going to be able to be trained.

00:06:00.642 --> 00:06:03.524
No-transcript.

00:06:03.466 --> 00:06:06.696
And finally, the facts of owning multiple dogs.

00:06:06.696 --> 00:06:10.975
Like I've already said, each dog will need to be trained separately.

00:06:10.975 --> 00:06:30.158
70% of the clients that hire me are people that own anywhere from two to four dogs, and I explain to them on the phone before they hire me each dog needs to be trained separately and then we can start working with them together once they have a good level of basic obedience and discipline.

00:06:30.158 --> 00:06:36.437
The next fact is owning multiple dogs is a lot harder than it seems.

00:06:36.437 --> 00:06:38.572
This is always true.

00:06:38.572 --> 00:06:45.995
People think that if I raise one dog, I can put another dog into the mix and raise them both.

00:06:45.995 --> 00:06:48.132
It's going to be as easy as one dog.

00:06:48.132 --> 00:06:48.834
It's not.

00:06:48.834 --> 00:06:51.891
It's not double hard if you have two dogs.

00:06:51.891 --> 00:06:55.545
It's 10 times harder if you go from one dog to two dogs.

00:06:55.545 --> 00:07:12.036
There's so much to do with two dogs that it's almost borderline stressful to most people if you don't have good leadership skills and have everything set in place with management and have the dogs be trained immediately once you get both of them into the house.

00:07:13.365 --> 00:07:16.375
The third fact is that all dogs do not get along.

00:07:16.375 --> 00:07:24.512
The first thing you want to do when you bring a dog into a house where you currently have a dog is to make sure that they get along.

00:07:24.512 --> 00:07:30.411
For example, let's say you have an adult dog that's four years old and you want another puppy.

00:07:30.411 --> 00:07:41.656
You're thinking if I get another puppy, this puppy will be the companion of the adult dog and the adult dog will mentor the puppy and teach the puppy a whole bunch of good stuff.

00:07:41.656 --> 00:08:03.333
Chances are that's not going to work very well because you've got an adult dog who's calmer and more laid back and the puppy is very rambunctious, very outgoing, overstimulated all the time, has ADD just all over the place and this puppy wants to play and romp around and the adult dog wants to take naps.

00:08:03.333 --> 00:08:05.791
So how well is that going to work out?

00:08:05.791 --> 00:08:07.370
You've got to think about this.

00:08:07.370 --> 00:08:10.067
Naps, so how well is that going to work out?

00:08:10.067 --> 00:08:18.829
You got to think about this If you get a three-month-old puppy and a four-year-old dog, the age difference is going to be, in human years, about 30 years old to about four years old.

00:08:19.790 --> 00:08:20.954
That's a big difference.

00:08:20.954 --> 00:08:22.776
What are those two going to do together?

00:08:22.776 --> 00:08:23.865
Not a whole lot.

00:08:23.865 --> 00:08:29.826
In review, having an older dog and getting a younger puppy usually does not work very well.

00:08:29.826 --> 00:08:35.005
In review, having an older dog and getting a young puppy usually does not work very well.

00:08:35.648 --> 00:08:41.767
Like I said, most of the calls I get are people with multi-dog households and they don't know how to manage it.

00:08:41.767 --> 00:08:48.676
They don't know how to train each dog separately, they don't know what each dog needs based on their breed and so on and so forth.

00:08:48.676 --> 00:09:06.110
And finally, I'll just say that if you're going to get another dog when you already have one dog, put a lot of time and a lot of energy into thinking about the exact breed, the age, everything about the dog that you're going to bring into the house.

00:09:06.110 --> 00:09:11.219
When you already have a dog in your house, everything can go wrong very quickly.

00:09:11.219 --> 00:09:18.051
Very rarely does it work out 100% perfect and smoothly from the get-go.

00:09:18.051 --> 00:09:20.655
I hope this information was helpful to you.

00:09:20.655 --> 00:09:26.654
